DESIGN INTERNSHIP
Location: South Philadelphia
Stipend: $3,000 (paid in monthly payments, prorated)
Duration: 3 months, (mid-February through mid-May)

Scout is an interdisciplinary design and development practice working to transform the Bok, a former Vocational School and an iconic 340,000 sq. ft. Art Deco building in South Philadelphia, into a creative facility for artisans, entrepreneurs and community groups. This mixed-use development is unlike anything undertaken to date in the region and as it is in its early stages of development, the role provides a unique opportunity for an ambitious and talented individual to contribute to a critical stage of the project. SUMMARY
Scout is seeking a full or part time Design Intern starting in mid-February 2016 to work as part of the design team. Candidates should be able to commit to a minimum of three days per week, which should include two consecutive days. The role will focus on carefully recording the existing building and its context as well as assisting in the development and delivery of design projects. This position requires an enthusiastic, detail oriented candidate who is interested in working with existing structures. The ideal candidate is pursuing a Master’s Degree and/or holds an undergraduate degree in architecture and/or historic preservation. 

Successful candidates will have a relevant background, applicable skills and enthusiasm for Scout’s work. We’re looking for engaged thinkers with diverse skill sets, who will bring creativity, experience and enthusiasm to our small and dedicated team. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS 

  • To record the existing structure through producing and verifying as-built drawings and a photo documentary of the existing condition
  • To assist design projects in the production and amendment of drawings
  • To assist with facilitating the construction and delivery of projects
  • General administrative tasks as needed

REQUIRMENTS

  • Experienced in Adobe CreativeSuite  and CAD software (preferably Vectorworks) with exceptional graphic presentation, hand drawing and design skills
  • Working knowledge of 3D drawing software i.e.SketchUp or Rhino
  • Precise approach to work and an eye for detail
  • Excellent analytical and problem solving skills
  • A highly professional demeanor with strong attention to detail
  • A self motivated and proactive individual with enthusiasm for Scout’s work
  • Editing, copy editing and photo research skills a bonus
  • Must be comfortable performing administrative tasks as assigned
  • Successful candidate will be expected to work from their own laptop or computer and should have access to CAD drawing software, Adobe CreativeSuite and Microsoft Office

FINANCE AND REAL ESTATE INTERNSHIP
(2 part-time interns)

Location: Bok, 1901 S. 9th St., Philadelphia
Duration: January 2016 - March 2016

SUMMARY

Scout is seeking two part-time interns to focus on the financing of this complex mixed-use development. The ideal candidates will demonstrate maturity and initiative, excellent analytical ability, strong communication (written and oral) and teamwork skills. In this role you will be assisting our Director of Development, researching funding streams, producing financial models, completing funding applications, drafting term sheets, and providing general ledger support.

This position requires enthusiastic, highly motivated, and detail oriented candidates with an interest in applied research and research experience. Interest and experience in complex financing modeling and confidence in Microsoft Excel is essential. 
The ideal candidate is pursuing a Master’s Degree in Finance with a concentration in Real Estate or Urban Development, or relevant equivalents.

We are seeking serious candidates willing to commit to a part-time schedule for no less than three months. Successful candidates will have a relevant background, applicable skills and enthusiasm for Scout’s work. We’re looking for engaged thinkers with diverse skill sets, who will bring creativity, experience and enthusiasm to our dedicated team.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Develop financial models
  • Complete funding applications and grant applications in collaboration with Bok’s partners
  • Process interested leasing applicants
  • Schedule and organize building tours and write up findings
  • Draft term sheets for prospective tenants
  • Create detail sheets and summary packets for leasable spaces
  • Assist with office booking-keeping and general ledger
  • General administrative tasks as needed.

REQUIREMENTS

Intern will be expected to work from their own laptop or computer and should have access to Microsoft Office.

Intern will be paid a stipend which reflects their experience level and time availability on a monthly basis. Role could start in December if suitable candidate is available and able to start.

Scout and the Challenge Program Team Up for the 2015 Design Philadelphia Festival

As summer winds down and the temperatures slowly drop, the team here at Scout is gearing up for the 2015 Design Philadelphia Festival! From October 8-16, the Philadelphia Center for Architecture, along with over 150 partners, will host a wide variety of events, offering public programming that reaches across design disciplines and celebrates the city of Philadelphia as a place that continues to shape and be shaped by evolving practices in design and technology.

We, along with our friends at the Challenge Program, are excited to be one of ten interdisciplinary teams creating temporary installations on Pearl Street between 11th and 12th. Pearl Street Passage will feature the installations of all ten teams, each providing their take on the festival's theme of SHIFT. Mark your calendars for the first four days of the festival (October 8-11), and come experience a street transformed!

Looking for a Event & Design Manager with chutzpah!

We are recruiting for a temporary 6-month contract to take on a very special and exciting project at Bok. Please see role description below: 

POSITION SUMMARY

The Event and Design Manager will be responsible for managing and coordinating the implementation of a special series of launch events at the Bok Vocational School. The project will be designed and built by Scout’s in-house design team alongside local collaborators and makers, and, therefore, a background and interest in industrial design, architecture or carpentry would be ideal though not required. The Manager will be responsible for helping develop the event schedule, ensuring deadlines and budgets are adhered to and coordinating activities across a wide range of audiences (City officials, artists, makers, food & beverage operators). Day-to-day activities will include responding to enquires, arranging and ordering supplies, overseeing and developing marketing materials, submitting documentation required for permits, recruiting volunteers, liaising with suppliers, managing project budget and holding responsibility for project schedule.
